hello/həˈləʊ/UK — Received Pronunciation

Why guess English pronunciation?

English spelling froze centuries before its pronunciation did, so the letters on the page are an unreliable guide to the sounds. The same letters give different sounds, silent letters are everywhere, and the unstressed vowel (schwa) hides in plain sight. A transcription removes the guesswork.

The letter cluster "ough" can be pronounced six different ways (though, through, thought, rough, cough, bough).
Most unstressed vowels collapse to the schwa /ə/ — the single most common vowel in English speech.
US and UK transcriptions differ on r-colouring and several vowels, so the dialect matters.
Stress placement changes meaning and rhythm; IPA marks it with ˈ before the stressed syllable.
